Q&A: Evolution of Selfless Service in Spiritual Traditions - 2024-11-23 - Sri Prem Prayojan
0:01Yes, you can raise your hand if you have a question. Yes, mother. My question, Srila Gurudeva, is I heard one audio recording from, it was not your Harikatha, but I think it was in Russia, outside of one monastery, I think, or one church, and it was about Lord Jesus, was very interesting, because there you explain how many, what was actually the real meaning why he
0:54appeared, and at one point then you say that he was like destroying our legalistic mentality towards God, no? And many points was there inside, and then you say that, if I remember correctly, that into this legalistic mentality that we have includes also the Vaidhi-Bhakti and also the verse Iyataman prapadyante. So I think that inside this verse so many points can be seen according also to which with whom Shri Krishna is applying this reciprocation, no?
1:41So maybe towards those who are here in Maya or towards the who are here but are pure devotee and towards the eternal associate and other. So, if you could explain again this topic, we can meditate on this. First of all, what I told that day is that I was describing the history of their theology, the different viewpoints in regard to Christianity and the history of their theology.
Madhava Prabhu,
And how there is a gradual evolution towards the concept of the pure, causeless devotion.
3:25I will not give some seal of approval on any other traditions theology.
3:48But still, from our own perspective, we can look there and see to what degree the concept of unconditional and uninterrupted pure devotion is present.
Kakoy stepeni ih lubov razvivetsya.
4:13Just like our Prabhupada Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur, he said my, the shiksha guru, that is Srila Bhakti Vinoda Thakur, I don't want to say my father, he'd say that is, if I'll see he's my father, that is an obstacle, he's an eternal associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, so Srila Bhakti Vinoda Thakur, he taught me how to proof-read, because he was writing and then he would give the manuscript to Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur when he was quite young and he would proofread the manuscript.
Redaktiroval rukopisi.
5:15And he said, I am not only a proofreader of books, but I am a proofreader of men.
And he said, I am not only a proofreader of books, but I am proofreader of men. What does that mean?
5:39He said, I was born in the Karkata Rashi, that means under the zodiac sign of Cancer, the crab.
5:51So it is my nature, I proofread the person, and if I find in them anything which is contrary to Rupa Goswami's teaching,
6:09Uttama-bhakti is the continuous, unbroken cultivation of all activities of the body, mind and words, which is completely free from even the slightest scent of any other desire.
6:58Which is not mixed with the faith in karma, jnana, yoga, tapasya.
7:43So our standard is always Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's teaching.
7:51And from that standard we can evaluate the merit of any other conception that we may meet in the course of traveling here and there in the world, which is outside of the paradigm of Vedanta.
8:20So in regard to a legalistic conception, you should know that Krishna has said in Bhagavad-gita one rule of his behavior.
8:48As a person surrenders to me, then I reciprocate with them accordingly.
9:00So this is not the same as a conception like a karmakanda.
9:09In karmakanda a person is trying to enjoy this world.
9:22And so the actions are completely businesslike, transactional.
10:05So, their motivations in everything, they are self-centered. It is based on themselves.
10:37Because, first of all, Krishna said, I reciprocate, because He does not want to interfere in our svācchandyatā, the jīva is svācchanda, that means he has his own independent desire.
11:05What makes a soul superior to a rock?
And what makes a soul superior to a rock?
11:17That is that the rock is jaḍa, it is insentient.
Because the rock is jaḍa, it is insentient.
11:26But the soul has anubhava-śakti, the power to feel, experience. And the soul has icchā-śakti, the power to desire.
11:48So the soul has a minute independence and love has to be given by one's own free will.
12:34If you are, your consciousness is turned away from me, then I'll become Virāṭ-rūpa, the universe, and you can wander around in the universe thinking, oh, there's no God.
12:59If you want the mukti from the material world,
13:33remember, without any awareness, then I'll be Gopāla.
13:48So, we cannot say that the Krishna's statement or His mode of behavior is like some legalistic self-centered wrangling.
14:14You know that Krishna Himself said in the Rasa-līlā,
14:34If someone only loves you as much as you love them, then their love for you is not unconditional.
14:57They are merchants.
15:05Then there are those who love the other person, whether the other person loves them or not.
15:17And then there are those who don't love anyone, whether that person loves them or not. Three types of beloveds, gopīs asked, which of these three types of lovers, which one are you, Krishna?
15:39and it was a trap.
15:48They were trying to get Krishna to admit that he was in the third category.
Su-madhyamā means who has very beautiful waist, very thin waist.
16:27Because, oh gopīs, you always love me, whether I reciprocate with you or not.
16:39You left everything, surrendered to me and were serving me, but I disappeared from you and still, though I abandoned you, you never abandoned me. So you are in the middle category, the best category, you love whether the other person reciprocates or not.
17:16The mood that, oh, I will love you, whether you love me or not, why? Because there's no question of the gopī not loving him.
17:30Here the question arises, is Krishna according to his own words, just like a businessman, who is only, if you give 50 dollars, he gives 50 dollars, reciprocating, exactly.
17:45Shri, so far.
Krishna, if you give yourself a businessman or not, if you give him 50 dollars he for it, you give him 50 dollars? How you give yourself 50 dollars, or how it works?
17:58So, see, Krishna, He is in relation, let's say, to the Jiva's, we cannot say He's in that category.
18:10То есть, в отношении к jiva's Krishna, Krishna, he is in that category? Why?
18:16Why? Because even when the living entities have turned away from Him, but He's always trying to bring about their benefit, but in a gentle way.
18:41Though the living entities in the material world have turned away from Him, but still He appears in this world in many forms, in the form of the guru-parampara, in the form of the Vedas, and tries to create a situation, whereby they'll have chances again and again to awaken their spiritual consciousness and pure love.
19:25So, it cannot be said that even in regard to the living entities in this world, that it's a purely transactional relationship.
19:51Because also in the matter, not for the conditioned souls, but for the liberated souls, or those who have pure bhakti, then Sri Krishna, he reciprocates with the liberated souls according to what rasa they're in. And so, because if in a loving relationship one person will love in one way, but the other person will love in a different way, it will be rasa-bhasa.
20:46For example, if the devotee has the mood of a friend, and the lord would have the mood towards him like a servant, then it would be incompatible.
21:18Hanuman is kneeling at the feet of lord Ram, ready to serve him.
He cannot sit on the same seat
21:37But Arjuna, the friend of Krishna, after taking the prasadam, they both lie down together on the same bed
But Arjuna, he cannot sit on the same bed
21:51But Arjuna, he cannot climb on the shoulders of Krishna, like Sri Dhamma, the cowherd boys in Vrindavan, because his friendship is not so informal and familiar.
But Arjuna, he cannot climb on the shoulders of Krishna, like Sri Dhamma, the cowherd boys in Vrindavan, because his friendship is not so informal and familiar.
22:16So, Krishna reciprocates, if he did not reciprocate, then the relishment of Rasa would not be so beautiful.
So, if Krishna does not respond to the relationship, then the relishment of Rasa would not be so beautiful.
22:28And then, we can add one thing, that Krishna himself admitted, I made this promise to reciprocate, but the gopis have broken my promise.
And Krishna says, I have promised to respond to the relationship, but the gopis, they have broken my promise.
22:45Because Krishna can reciprocate with prema, sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, anurāga, bhāva, rudhabhāva, adhirūḍhabhāva, mādana, but not mohana and madana.
Krishna can respond with respect to sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, anurāga, bhāva, rudhabhāva, adhirūḍhabhāva, mādana, but not mohana and madana.
23:14So, the gopis, but especially Radhika's love, extends beyond his capacity.
23:28But that is also not a fault, but it's beautiful.
23:37O Radhika, I cannot reciprocate with you, so I am indebted to you forever. So Krishna's feeling of indebtedness and his desire to serve Radhika and Vraja-gopis that he's defeated, that is his glory.
It enhances his sweetness and his confession also gives the great Ananda to the gopis, gives joy to them.
24:26So that Ananda is one type of reciprocation.
And that Ananda is one type of reciprocation.
24:35So in this way you can consider the legalistic conception, what are the implications of a legalistic conception.
25:22And there is a sense that the Bhagavan is God.
And there is a sense that the Bhagavan is God.
25:32If he were not God, I would not serve him, I would serve someone else who was.
25:44But in the completely spontaneous devotion, there is no cause at all, there is no theological cause. The love for Krishna is why? Don't know.
26:09Sometimes it comes in the mind of the Vraja-vasis: Why do we love Nanda-maharaja's son even more than our own sons?
26:29Rukmini. Rukmini, when she was about to be married to Shishupala, she writes a letter and sends through a Brahmin to tell Krishna to come and kidnap her, because it's accepted rule that among kshatriyas you can do the rakshasa-vivaha, that means just go and kidnap a princess.
26:49If you fight other countries for her, and you win, then she is yours.
27:21But we see that Rukmini was still acting within the accepted etiquette that it was not so acceptable, actually, that she wrote a secret letter when her marriage had been arranged because she was being insubordinate to her family and so on. But still she wanted to have a relationship with Krishna and it was in the boundaries of social acceptance because kshatriyas are allowed to do this and who they have stolen away, then they have to marry them. And this married relationship is also acceptable according to Dharma.
28:27And in that letter she said: If you don't come, come and kidnap me. Then I hope I will do hard austerities, so intense that I will quickly die, I'll fast.
29:01So that means, if you don't come in time and I'm married, then I have no chance in this life to be related to you, because I'm married to someone else. So I have to fast to death and try again in the next life.
29:30But Vraja-gopis, they love Krishna before they're married, and after they're married, they still love Krishna. And Vraja-gopis, they do everything which is unacceptable, even after being married, they run out of their house in the middle of the night and go to serve Krishna.
29:59So even though they themselves are kula-stri, they are most chaste and most religious and therefore they cannot go against Dharma, but still the praying becomes so intense that it overtakes them and they forget who am I, where am I and transgress everything just to please see Krishna.
30:47Why? Why? No reason. It is said that there are seven causes of the appearance of Rati.
So actually for Vraja-gopis, the cause of their rati is just svabhava. It is their nature, it is who they are. They themselves cannot control it.
31:35It has no cause.
31:41So this is superior to any love of Vaikuntha or Mathura or Dvaraka, which is limited by Maryada.
