0:01Today I have a question about five vrittis buddhi.

It's a praman, viparyaya, vikalpa, nidra, smriti.

0:31And my question is, if viparyaya already exists, what means praman?

If exist avidya, asmita, raga, dvesha, abhinivesha, what means praman?

0:43I could not understand properly.

0:45Me.

1:18Of the five vrittis of Buddhi, Praman, Vipariya, Vikalpa, Smriti, and Nidra.

1:35So the first one, Praman, means valid cognition. Valid cognition. Cognition means recognizing something in a valid way.

2:09Then, the second one, vipariyai, means invalid cognition.

2:20Recognizing something in an incorrect way.

2:30Sankshai, sorry, visha, sorry, vikalpa, that means imagination.

2:39A vikalpa означает воображение.

2:42Smriti means memory.

2:45And nidra means the sleeping state.

2:52So, first of all, the valid cognition.

3:05The senses are coming in contact with their sense-objects.

3:20And then when the chitta transforms and becomes the object which is being perceived.

3:40At first, that is called the nirvikalpa-pratyaksh. It is a raw perception, a raw experience, which is uninterpreted.

4:08But then the very next moment the buddhi has a vritti, it moves and it tries to identify what that experience actually is.

4:35So that is called Savikalpa-patyaksh.

Savikalpa-patyaksh.

4:43So, let us say, someone speaks.

4:52Then that sound goes into the ear, and the intelligence does the vritti, begins to move and identifies this is a sound.

5:18It's not a smell.

5:22It's not a form, it's a sound.

It's not a form, it's a sound.

5:25What kind of sound?

5:29So then, when it's decided, what kind of sound it is, then this is praman.

5:44Now, what's the meaning of the sound that can be now mixed with Vikalpa?

5:58So, in Srimad Bhagavatam, the Bhagavatam does not use exactly the same vocabulary as the Patanjali.

Patanjali.

6:20In the Bhagavatam, what is called Pramana in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, it's called Nishchai.

Nishchai.

6:37And what is called Vikalpa in Patanjali is called Sangshai.

Sangshai.

6:50So Nishchai means ascertainment, when you decide, this is what it is. So when you correctly ascertain what something is, that is called Nishchai or Pramana.

7:07And Sangshai, what is called Vikalpa in Patanjali Yoga Sutras, in Bhagavatam is called, in the description of the five vrittis of Buddhi, it is called Sangshai, means doubt, when you are oscillating, is it like this or is it like that?

7:36And the intellect is making some construction about what it is, which doesn't correlate to the reality.

7:53So then you have vipariyay, vipariyay means the five kleshas, vipariyay means the five causes of suffering.

8:10They are avidya, asmita, raga, dvesa and abhinivesa.

8:18The mistaking the anatma for atma, what is not the soul for the soul.

8:36Mistaking anitya for nitya, what is temporary and thinking that it's permanent.

8:56Taking what is apavitra and thinking it's pavitra, thinking something which is impure is pure.

9:09And thinking that something is a cause of happiness when it's a cause of misery.

So these are the different features of avidya, according to Patanjali.

9:29Patanjali is describing it from the perspective of the subjective effect of avidya.

9:45Because it's described in the category of vrittis of your buddhi. So in other words, what effect does avidya have in your consciousness? So it's very subjective. Whereas the Bhagavatam defines it, not only subjectively, but also objectively, that this avidya is the shakti of the Supreme Lord.

10:25So, in this way, Vedanta is more complete, Bhagavatam is the artha-praṇīta of Vedanta, So, from the objective point of view, Avidya is the Shakti of the Supreme Lord that causes the union of the Upadhis with the jnana-vritti of the living entity.

11:14And also covers the jiva is jnana-svarupa, he is made of consciousness. So that consciousness is covered, that means he is self-awareness. and the jnana-vritti is the function of consciousness that emanates from him to know things other than himself. So the avaranatmaka shakti covers his, the chitswarup, we can say, his own conscious awareness of his own conscious nature and the vikshepatmaka aspect of avidya makes a union between the jnana-vritti that enters from him and his upadhis, material designations.

12:29Vika shiteva, paka, kapita

Paka, arani, vika shiteva, karadha, kapita shiteva, WHO apacita smelis sa ajuna sa ajuna sa ajuna-vṛtti.

12:42So Vedanta or Bhagavatam, we can say, gives a more complete explanation which also makes it very obvious that the only solution to all the sufferings of worldly existence At the first step of the journey is to turn one's consciousness to God, which is facilitated by bhakti.

13:24So, when this takes place, this one is affected by avidya, then naturally the next klesha arises asmita. And asmita means the quality of I am something that I am not. In other words, the ego, that is the identification of the conscious being with the instruments of the senses.

14:13Asmirari, and then Raghunatha, attachment, aversion and absorption in matter.

14:29These are all invalid cognitions.

14:35So let's say, for example, if a horse comes, then your buddhi moves and says, this is a horse.

14:47You have decided, this is a horse.

14:51And nishchaya, it has been ascertained.

14:56So that is prama, that is valid cognition, yes, it is a horse.

15:06It's not a rabbit.

15:10It's not a hallucination.

15:15You have correctly ascertained what it is.

15:19But the new concept of what a horse actually is, then that is vikalpa.

15:47So, if there's no vikalpa, then you'll see, according to Vedanta,

15:52
chara, chara, viha-bha-sa-tsu-shat, tadhviha-bha-de-jo-bha-ta-stat-bha-bha-bha-bha-vita-ta-ta, the word horse primarily indicates Krishna.
в лекции: «according to Vedanta»

16:13Sri Krishna has a higher grievous horse incarnation.

16:20And the material energy being a shadow of the spiritual energy. All the various forms of the Lord are also, those forms are also here.

16:37The expansion of Srikrishna Paramatma has entered into the non-differentiated potential material energy and caused it to manifest in the form of a horse. And there's a soul which is riding along with that, but primarily this is one form of Paramatma.

17:15So, when you understand this message of Vedanta or Srimad Bhagavatam, now Bhagavatam for you has become jnana deep, it's become the light of knowledge.

17:35And when you look at Srimad Bhagavatam, even without opening it, and the shining love between the various avatars of the Lord and their great devotees like Prahlad, like Dhruva, like Ambarish Maharaj, like Chaitanya Mahaj, is shining from Srimad Bhagavatam, now Srimad Bhagavatam for you has become like the sun.

18:17And then, when all the shining light of the sun, of the loving exchanges between the various avatars and the incarnations has expanded fully, then, Srimad Bhagavatam becomes like a desire tree and reveals the forest of Vrindavan and the sweet loving past times of Radha and Krishna.

19:04So, a person cannot go to that experience of Vrindavan and Radha Krishna directly, first some light should be in your consciousness, then the sun should be in your consciousness, and then the experience of Vrindavan.

19:36That's why I want you to hear and study Srimad Bhagavatam systematically from the beginning, the first kanto to the ninth kanto, then the tenth kanto begins.

19:54So, if that jnana-dipa has manifest, then your pramana is not mixed with vikalpa, it's vikalpa-rahita.

20:16Vikalpa-rahita. But until that time, even though your perception may be correct,

But until that time, even though your perception may be correct,

20:27you are about to cross the road, you see that a bus is coming.

You are about to cross the road, you see that a bus is coming.

20:35It's correct, the bus is coming.

So you stay and you wait for it to go before you cross.

20:41It's a pramana, a valid cognition.

20:51But still, the interpretation of the entire situation, there is the viparyaya, and on top of that viparyaya, vikalpas, so many vikalpas.

21:20So that is why the four defects of the living entity—bhrama, pramada, viparyaya—so first bhrama, bhrama includes viparyaya and vikalpa, because bhrama is one kind of viparyaya also.

21:44Then the mind becomes unsteady.

21:48And due to the absence of the concentration, you cannot understand which thoughts are valid and which thoughts are vikalpa.

22:10Kaivalyam sattvakam jnanam. So, when sattva-guna comes, then you can appreciate the oneness, the interconnectedness of all things with the Supreme Lord.

22:33Rajas, vikalpa-khacit yat, when passion is there, then the mind is just one big bundle of messy vikalpas.

22:41А когда rajas, vikalpa-khacit yat, when passion is there, then the mind is just one big bundle of messy vikalpas.

22:53But because all the people around you, they all have the same bundle of messy vikalpas, there's an intersubjective verification, so everyone feels like I'm in the real and living in the real world, get real.

23:20And this is why we have to have sadhu-sanga.

23:28Because only the sadhus will cut our vikalpas, whereas everyone else will fortify them and make them stronger and more deeply embedded.

23:43They will reinforce our vikalpa.

23:46Только sādhu может отрубить все наши vikalpa, иначе мы будем их подпитывать, делать более сильными. and faith in them.

23:56So you can compare the description of the five vrittis of buddhi from the third canto of Srimad Bhagavatam. Actually, Vishvanatha Cakravarti in his commentary, and Sridhara Swami also, they quote the sutras of Patanjali's five vrittis in the verses of the third canto of Srimad Bhagavatam's commentary on the five vrittis, and the names are a little different.

24:18Niscaya, viparyaya, samsaya, smriti, and svapna.

24:51vritti, t.e. pramāṇa, niscaya, saṃśaya,

24:55и т.д.

24:56So, the Bhagavatam is speaking of the same idea, five vrittis of buddhi, but sometimes, when you have another word, a synonym, when you have more than one word which describes the same concept, it becomes clearer.

25:28Because the different features of that vritti, the different words which are synonyms, they can bring out different features of that particular vritti.

25:48In the Vyasa Bhashya, the commentary of Vyasadeva on the Yoga Sutras, it gives so many explanations, different aspects of Vikalpa.

Vikalpa.

26:12For example, if you say, all types of negative abstractions are Vikalpa.

Vikalpa.

26:25If you say, oh, this being has the quality of deathlessness,

26:31дорожка перевода · текст английскийif you say, oh, this being has the quality of deathlessness,

26:33дорожка перевода · текст английскийif you say, oh, this being has the quality of deathlessness,

26:36you understand what it means, but actually deathlessness is a negative abstraction. If you examine the form of that being, you will not find any deathlessness anywhere. It's not a thing, it's a negative. So all negative abstractions are vikalpa.

So actually all the values of modern life, like freedom, equality and tolerance, they're all negative abstractions.

27:25That those who want to enjoy the material world, they're always confused, and they confuse others by speaking in the language of negative abstractions.

27:57So freedom, now it's defined as the absence of any restraints, negatively.

28:13But it's Vikalpa, there's no such situation anywhere with this absence of obstacle or restraint.

28:28stringent conditions on everything in the material world.

28:39Equality means the absence of one thing being more or less than something else, but everything is more or less than other things.

28:57So, another type of vikalpa, the Vyasabhashya gives, is a Citra's cow.

Citra.

29:08You see a cow, and you think, what is this? Then you reckon, oh, this is Citra's cow.

Citra.

29:18But the fact of the matter is, if you examine that cow, completely, every atom in that cow, you will not find anything about Citra.

29:37So, Aham mameti, I and Mine, the material ego, and also possessiveness towards material things is a vikalpa, because it's not Citra's cow, it's not anyone's cow, not my cow, not your cow, nothing belongs to anyone. Possession is a vikalpa.

29:55ato.

30:18
So, Isha Upanishad said, Isha vasyam idam sarvam, everything in the universe belongs to God, and anyone who claims possessiveness over anything else, this is vikalpa, illusion.
Isha Upanishad»

30:42Though, in terms of the following worldly dharma, then the possessiveness as a social contract must be recognized, otherwise you cannot follow asteyam, the yama of not stealing.

31:36
Śabdajñānānupātī vastuśūnyo vikalpaḥ.

31:43Vikalpa is a construct that appears in the intellect which follows the use of words which has no corresponding objective to the reality in the physical world.

32:19Because, for example, in your mind there is a structure of language, and in languages there is the genitive case, the possessive case, and by that language in your mind you say this is mine. So by using words, you have made a construct now, which is actually not true, because nothing is yours. So śabdajñānānupātī, following your understanding of the meaning of words, comes a vṛtti, which has no corresponding reality.

But they've never seen an atom. It's just they heard a word, atom. And the concept formed in the mind and they believe it.

33:51Vikalpa. And you'll see that all the knowledge practically that everyone has are just non-correlated thought constructs that came about by the hearing words.

34:28So, the spiritual life begins with śravaṇam, hearing. We have to hear to acquire, not vikalpas, but to eradicate the power, and gradually the experience of real śravaṇa is a direct revelation, a sphūrti in the heart of the subject which is being described.

So it's worth deliberating very carefully on these psychological points.

35:29The mind is just always like creating, it's like fog.

35:38And so we chant the holy name of Krishna, and the rays of the holy name dissipate this fog.

35:55So it's important to avoid the ten offenses. Otherwise you chant, and just remain in the fog.

36:10So if you have this experience, then you have to make some adjustment and very carefully try to avoid the ten offenses, so the light of the name can come and dissipate that fog.
